The W Trek at a Glance
The W Trek in Torres del Paine National Park covers roughly 80 kilometers across four to five days. Its W-shaped route takes hikers past glaciers, electric blue lakes, and the towering granite spires that gave the park its name. It is challenging but accessible to anyone with reasonable fitness and a willingness to brave the elements.
What to Expect on the Trail
Days are long, often 6 to 8 hours of hiking with frequent steep climbs. The weather changes within minutes, swinging from sun to snow even in summer. Refugios provide bunks and hot meals along the route, while campsites give you a more rustic experience for a fraction of the cost.
Packing for Patagonia
Layering is everything. A waterproof shell, insulated mid-layer, and quick-dry base layers are non-negotiable. Trekking poles ease the descents, and a quality dry bag protects electronics. Reserve refugios and campsites months in advance, as spots sell out for the entire summer season.
Beyond the W
If you have extra time, consider extending into the O Circuit, which loops the back side of the massif and is dramatically less crowded. Either way, plan a buffer day in Puerto Natales for rest, hot showers, and seafood at the local market.
